The Gavel: May Record Reviews

It's been a while in coming but I've got a couple of new (for me, anyway) tunes so lets pick up our gavels and judge!

Singles:
George Morel - "Let's Take Drugs" - Recently a big hit on the Beatport sales charts is this Yoshitoshi offering from the New York veteran hit maker who long ago decamped to the sunny climes of Miami Beach. This one will take you back to the heady days of the 80's with its Steinski style cut ups of President Dubya exhorting listeners to, erm, take drugs.  Yes, its cheesy; but its so well done that its just simply too much fun not to play.  The original mix is fun, putting the Presidential vocal way up front, but the Cedric Gervais remix is the one I picked up, the music has a bit more energy and at almost 12:00 you can head for the bathroom to follow the President's orders if necessary. December pardons for everyone!

Benno Blome - "Sarahtov Airlines" -Picked this one up when I saw that someone who bought some of my own Phantom Power tracks also bought this.  It's part of a three track EP and by far the standout cut. Simple, and yes minimal (it's not over yet!) this one has the quirky disembodied vocal stutters and bleeps we've come to associate with the genre but puts it over a nice Basic Channel style groove (stop your yawning, bitches).  Similar to Phantom Power's "Space In Your Face" and everyone loves that number.  Or is it just me?

Jamie Lidell - "Little Bit of Feel Good" -Got the Mr. Ozio mix the other day for the express purpose of playing this at Easy.  Party people!  The vocal has that classic soul/R&B vocal that Jamie is going for these days and Mr. Ozio's mix gives the cut an extra shot in the arm with his pumped up drums and playful vocal FX. Memo to self: this bad boy is short (about 3:00!) so don't run into the middle of the room and dance like an idiot no matter how much you may want to.

Williams - "Love On A Real Train" -Remember a time when Tom Cruise was just a good looking young actor and not a nutty Scientologist keeping Katie Holms locked up in a Colorado basement?  Williams apparently does; as he has refashioned Tangerine Dream's best moment from the Risky Business soundtrack into this charming electronica number.  He has a lot to work with here, since the original synth arpeggiator part is just so great it would be hard to screw up and Williams wisely keeps to the original concept with his two mixes. The original mix is ambient while the Odyssey mix bumps up the tempo and adds a little deep house flavor (yes the distortion on the bassline is supposed to be there so don't complain about the sound when I play it or I will punish you by taking away your pizza).  The Version by Studio is also terrific in a down tempo funky way.  Love this track, love all the mixes.  Hurray for everything. Let's go jump on a couch.

Sunday Night is coming up! Get ready for Easy!

In case you readers are not on the email list, here's the info for this weekend's party!

This Sunday May 11th DJs K-Tel Jenkins and Rob Rives are back again at Nowhere bar with a special Mother's Day Easy! After draining your wallet with brunch in Soho (Is that Gweneth Paltrow over there with Chris Martin and Brian Eno? Brian looks pasty.) and a trip to Agnes B, you'll be delighted by the free pizza and pool table; not to mention the fabulous music. Rob will be debuting a mix of his upcoming single "City For Sale" about life in the New New York featuring brilliant vocals by NYC legends DJ Shifty (Craig Roseberry) and Sylvia Gordon of Kudu/Black Betty fame. Mothers are optional; as there may be some things going on you'd rather her not know about ;)

This sunday at 10 pm, Rob and I are getting together again for another edition of easy, combining forward thinking house styles with a clear sense of dance music roots, to make for an eclectic and entertaining evening. There's free pizza and pool games supplied by the club, and your friendly bartenders David and Patrick will keep you sorted with strong mixes of their own.
Hopefully see you all there!
