Let's get right to it. To get things off to a fun start, I've included a link to a remix I did of a track by Black Mamba called "Vicious". Originally a Larry Levan production, the 12" thoughtfully included an accapella which I found irresistible.
Listen, enjoy, share with your friends...
A few new records up for judgement in this installment of what Kenny and I are calling "The Gavel".
First up: Hercules and Love Affair/Hercules and Love Affair. Just got a copy of this yesterday and it's cute. It's nice to hear Antony in Johnson-less mode and having some fun on the dance-floor. The album is retro-house/disco with a few dark edges to cut the cheese factor and generally works. "Iris" could almost be a mid 80's Chris and Cosey track with its "artless" vocal. Charming though. This record is already getting big time buzz so I'm sure we'll be sick of it by summer, but hey that's ages from now. Two additional non-album cuts "Roar" and "Classique #2" are also highly recommended. The Frankie Knuckles mix of "Blind" is quite fabulous and I'll definitely be playing this one on Sunday, so bring your own gavels and judge for yourself.
I also bought (yes BOUGHT! how quaint!) the MGMT album "Oracular Spectacular" which turned out to be a hit or miss affair. Three great tracks: "Time To Pretend", "Kids", and "Electric Feel"; but the rest of the album doesn't have the impact of these awesome techno-rock anthems. I'm seeing a singles band here.
Singles: DONS and DBN featuring Kadoc "The Nighttrain" is terrific. I got four mixes but haven't even listened to anything but the On Board mix and the Jerry Ropero mix since they are so fierce. Sascha Funke's new single "Double Checked" is terrifically eerie, I'm digging the original mix. Gotta pick up a copy of his "Mango" album. Also into a track by Mock and Toof called "Beat Up" which has a funky/spacey vibe complete with psychedelic organs. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
We'll post the playlist after Sunday night for those of you interested. See you at Nowhere...
